My little cousin wants a dog, so I thought about getting him one. I asked his parents and they are ok with it. I want the dog to be safe, so I wonder would this be the best present for him.

I think he should start off with a goldfish, work up to a hamster, and eventually when he's 12, a dog.

Sure, make sure you get a hearty, good tempered breed, and I always advocate getting a shelter dog. This can raise problems with behavior but it shouldn't be detrimental if you spend some time with the animal to "screen" for problems and pick a puppy.
Getting the dog that young will mean that the parents do most of the work but the boy will bond to it from a young age. If his parents renege on their consent to care for it you share responsibility to make sure it goes to a good home, perhaps yours.

No. A puppy for a 5 year old wouldn't be a good Christmas gift. I'm not sure the child is ready to handle such responsibility. Instead, you should get the child something that will benifit his imagination. Therefore, I strongly recommend Legos.

well a 5 yr old isnt really capable of taking care of a dog by himself so it just depends on if you think that his family can handle the responsibilites of a dog because it isn't like some toy you can throw in the closet if you get bored of it, it is a living breathing thing that needs plenty of love and attention

Could a five year old cope with his back garden being the dogs
toilet. Its like giving a baby to a five year old to take care off.Buy
him a rabbit,if the parents are in agreement with helping to take care of it,along with a hutch and run.

NO WAY!!! A five year old? I mean - reality check - a ten year old probably can't even handle that much responsibilty, but a five year old? That's just going too far. Unless, of course, the parents take care of it, but then it's technically not the five year old's dog.

obviously the 5 year old is not capable of taking care of the dog, if the parents acknowledge that they will take care of it then yes, get it.

Certainly not! I think you should think carefully - you might think that you are giving a cute puppy, but remember that puppy needs a lifetime of love and affection. A puppy is not just for Christmas, it's for life!
