Not really. There's more profit generated with a great past time as people are more likely to go see a remake of a movie they really love (so they can talk about how the original is better), then go see a movie that was originally bad with the chance that it'll still be pretty bad, remade or not!
I don't think bad movies in the first place get the attention of the directors, producers or even audiences.
But in answer to your question, yes, it probably would make more sense.

Well, risk costs. Hollywood loves to hoard all the money that they can so that they will have it whenever they need to make Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Jack Nicholson, or any other big names you can think of more rich. If film making wasn't about making blockbuster features every time then we would see a lot more of these I'd assume. But of course profits, profits, profits. They aren't cheap to make, and besides if people in general didn't like it the first time, then why would they see a preview on tv and run out to their car to go see it? They wouldn't and therefore the film makers don't.

I agree with you.
The worst is when Hollywood tries to do remakes of European or British classics with a not-so-deft touch - now, that's a real hall of horrors!
This kind of stupidity boils down to greed, sooner or later.
