Society was not effected by McCarthyism back in 1950. Though I presume it was affected by it. Society was effected way way before 1950, in the prehistoric era. And we don't know how it was effected because we have no history of it.

Regarding McCarthyism, I don't think that it had a large effect on society. I think that the American society in general is on a self-correcting course. The errors that have been done during that era have been repeated (during George W Bush presidency) and probably will repeat themselves again.

Pulled right from wikipedia:

"Many people suffered loss of employment, destruction of their careers, and even imprisonment. Most of these punishments came about through trial verdicts that would later be overturned,[1] laws that would later be declared unconstitutional,[2] dismissals for reasons that would be later declared illegal[3] or actionable,[4] or extra-legal procedures that would later come into general disrepute."

Communist witch hunts. People accused others of being communists, to scare others to promote their own agenda.
Like Bush's "war on terror", calling Democrats "unpatriotic" to scare others and force his agenda.
