Try turning on some good, loud music and just going at it. Make sure you clean the places you cant stand being disorganized. Works for me!

The best thing to do is to eliminate the clutter, so it can't get messy. Keep only the things you use or need. If you have sentimental things, put them in a shoebox in the closet. Throw out clothes you don't wear, misc. stuff that just takes up space. Shoes you don't wear, excess jackets, stack cds in a drawer or on a shelf, get a desk organizer if you have pens and pencils in your room. Dust and vacuum. Stick to a very strict rule that whatever you get out must be put away when you are done. Dirty clothes ALWAYS go in the laundry basket. Nothing goes under the bed. If there is stuff under there, throw it away because you don't use it. I love to clean a room, and elimination is the best key. My daughter loves when i do the elimination for her, and she doesn't even know what's missing, because she didn't even remember she had that stuff. Less stuff, less mess. Stick to it!!

Get rid of all the stuff you don't need. Be realistic and toss anything that is not important. If you really want to keep something but realistically are not going to use it, put it away in plastic/rubber boxes and pack it in your garage (or closet if you don't have a garage). Always store your winter/summer clothes with cedar, moth balls and/or dryer sheets (so they smell nice and not musty). One way I found of keeping the space under my bed clear is by buying some of those flat drawers on wheels (made especially for under the bed) and putting old paperwork or things I don't use frequently (like scissors or board games).
Aside from this, I have heard a lot of people recommend plastic bags that can be packed with comforters, sweaters, etc and have the air sucked out of them so that they can be stored easily.
Keeping your room clean is not just nice in itself, it's also good for your health. Be sure to vacuum once a week and wash your sheets, blankets, pillow cases and curtains frequently, too. Keep an eye out for cobwebs in the corners of your room and clean those with your vacuum attachment or a broom. One dusting tool I highly recommend is the Swiffer Duster. it picks up dust and lint easily, and best of all, it traps it (very important to people with allergies). For a fresh scented room, I recommend Fabreze air freshener... you can spray it on fabric (chairs, carpets, surtains, etc.) and it gets rid of old musty smells.
Try to do your laundry at least once a week. If you let it go longer it will pile up and get smelly and the bigger the pile, the less you'll want to do it... If you don't have a washer/dryer at home, try to hit a laundromat after work/school during weeknights. There are less people and you're more likely to get all your laundry done at once.
I don't know what you could do to motivate yourself to keep your room clean other than to suggest that you maybe invite people over more often. You usually don't want other people to know your room is gross and smelly... If you are an adult then you definitely don't want people to think this of you, and if you're a kid... maybe you can work something out with your parents to where they reward you for having a tidy room. ALL parents appreciate a nice, clean room.

Man I run into the same trouble once in a blue moon - the best way to clean your room is by organizing it. The more organized - the more focussed you can find things and make it seem so much more cleaner than before.
Organization really does help A LOT.

Get cardboard boxes. Get some cheap shelf liner paper (sticky backed) and adorn said boxes (Or use a shaprie to mark them.) You can even download images to put on the front of the boxes, paint, color, etc. them. Use these boxes to catagorize your stuff. for my son I have his favorite characters doing what the box is intended for (ie. SpongeBob and Mrs. Puff driving a boat is for his cars.) This makes clean-up easy, and his stuff stays organised.
The key to any job of this sort is a place for everything and everything in it's place. It sound like things have no final destination, so they get scattershot about. You can invest in books that tell you how to do it, buy hundreds of dollars of plastic to store things prettily, etc. None of this will work without a plan. Take cardbaord boxes, lable them. Take pen and paper and designate a specific place for every item (you start with a general item box (like shoes), then break down each box into sub-boxes.
Once you have learned to throw your shoes into the same box and you shirts into the hamper, etc., and never (and I mean never) let a day go by without putting things into their place (even if you are really tired or very late or busy) for three months, go invest in some sassy shoe organisers and whatnots. You deserve it!
If you invest money ahead of developing a habit of being 'naturally organised' you will waste serious cash and make yourself look like a messy foolio! All of you cool organising stuff will be filled with disorganized junk. Good luck! This is a hard habit to develop!

Do a deep cleaning (get rid of old junk, dust, vacuum, organize) Then everyday do a few things to keep up the cleaning. Such as make your bed right away, put dirty clothes in the hamper and fold and put away clean clothes. This will help you keep it clean.

I usually pick all the clutter up, dust , then vacuum. If you keep cleaning once a week you place should be fairly clean. Pick up every day, that would help too.
