I'm suing and my foot was severed at work and wanted to know how much you can get for a broken or lost foot/ankle in a lawsuit.

I am terribly sorry to hear of your injury and the loss of your foot and I am certain that no amount of money will be able to compensate you for this. That having been said there is no easy or obvious manner in which to determine a monetary award and many things are taken into account such as age, previous work experience, and educational level. The only 'objective' measure that I know of is that which is used by the majority of states to determine permanent impairment. These guidelines were developed by the American Medical Association and are known as the Guide to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. Since these are objective they should be consistent between physicians, attorneys, and judges. The amputation of a foot is defined as a 100% impairment of that foot (obviously), a 62% impairment of that lower extremity (leg), and a 25% impairment of the whole body. The monetary award is generally determined for a young person with a full life expectancy. The amount expected to be earned is determined. The amount expected to be earned with the disability is determined. The different is calculated and this is multiplied by 25%. Then an additional award for pain, suffering, and future medical and equipment (such as a wheelchair and or a splint) is added.
