I want to learn to express breast milk by hand. I have found pictures on the web showing how to do it, but I cant get the hang of it. Does anyone have any tips, advice, or know of a website that helped you learn

it might sound weird put if you just mess with your nipples a little till you can feel your milk to let down then put your index finger on one side of your ariola (not sure of spelling) and your thumb on the other side, slightly squeeze and push back towards your ribs and chest, then squeeze tighter as you pull foward and try to let the stream stop my itself before doing it again. hope it helps, i didn't know the best way to explain. ( just make sure you dont squeeze the nipple itself, it hurts lol)

My advice is not to worry about following any examples on pictures or video. Everybody has different breasts. One way might work for someone else but not you, and vice versa.
Practice, practice, practice. If you have trouble getting it going, use a pump briefly until it starts to flow, and then try switching to hand. Once I got the knack of it, I found I could express by hand almost as quickly as I could pump. Good luck.

PS- be sure to scrub hands with anti bacterial soap prior.

Just go back to the delivery ward and have the nurses show you. There are lactation experts at the hospital you birthed at always available to moms having nursing issues.

Or you can contact le leche and ask for help from a local rep. Thats really helpful.

http://www.lalecheleague.org is an awesome source for information related to breastfeeding. In most areas they can also get a counselor (free) out to your home to help with any issues you're having. Your OB or pediatrician (or the phone book) may have contact information for your local branch.

Try the La Leche league. They may even have someone in your area who will come to your house and help you.
