Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Without Question. He pulled the country out of the great depression, not just through policy but with encouragement. He realized the importance of the country's morale as well as GDP and GNP. he pulled the nation together, and when WWII came, he went in strong and made sure the US won. Not only that, but he laid the groundwork for a lasting peace after the war, including but not limited to the UN, which his wife, Elenor, was the First US delegate to.
Carter, Reagan and Clinton were all quite good as well, along with Theodore Roosevelt and Wilson, though none of them could ever hope to match FDR.

Ronald Reagan.....he was the ideal conservative. He loved America and wanted all Americans to realize we live in "that shining city on a hill." His tax cuts were a sign of great leadership.
JFK also was great on defense and tax cuts. He would probably be a Republican today.

Reagan.
For tear gassing the hippies when he was the governor of California and not being afraid to bomb the hell out of Libya when Libyan terrorists killed American citizens.
