A pure substance can be either an element or a compound.
Example of element is oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, etc.
Example of compound is water, CO2, NH3,etc

Pure substances are devoid of contaminates or impurities. Like that other person said, elements are theoretically the most pure, fundamental, basic substance; however, a compound can be pure as well if it has no impurities mixed in. You could also argue that a mixture of NaCl and water is pure if you were searching for a pure saline solution. Your question is a bit vague!
