Mixture And Pure Substance

Water is a substance even though it is made up of 2 different elements. A substance means it has the same composition all the way through. If you take a glass of water and compare a spoonful at the top to a spoonful at the bottom, there is no difference because the actual atoms bond. It's H(2)O, not H and O.

In contrast, a mixture is not completely bonded together. Even if it appears to be completely the same, if you were to separate the molecules from the other molecules, they would be individually different. Take chocolate milk. The chocolate does not bond to the milk, so even if it looks completely smooth, it's not really a "substance" in the sense that it is just one thing. It's chocolate and milk.

A mixture can't be a substance because a substance cannot be separated by any physical means. You can't break down water into hydrogen and oxygen with your hands.

Um...because it's a mixture? A mixture is two or more things mixed together. A pure substance is all one thing.

A mixture is two or more substances that are mixed together, without a chemical reaction occurring.

For example, if I pour vinegar and water into a glass, there is no difference in the way it looks, but there are two separate entities--water and vinegar.

Because a mix is of two pure substances. If you don't mix then you have two pure substances.
