I am always amazed by people who think going to counseling means something is broken, especially pre marital or pre engagement. The best time to go to a doctor is when you are on your deathbed, right? No, everyone knows you make healthy choices throughout your life. Going to a counselor at any stage is a healthy choice and a form of preventative maintenance. Most couples go to premarital counseling after they have made their decision. They don't care if they are compatible, they are getting married and no one can change that. Why are they going to counseling? They are going to learn how to have a stronger marriage or learn how to be more prepared. Great! You are to be commended for wanting to make sure the relationship has a firm foundation and beginning. You are exactly right, counseling can identify areas where you can grow…ever person has “blind spots” and these make it difficult to see what needs to be tweaked. Ok, to answer your question: you will want to do a Google search for “marriage and family therapist” and enter your zip code or "Dallas, TX." These counselors specialize in marriage, of course, and will be able to tell you how to prepare for it (or even engagement). You will find them in the Yellowpages as well, but look for the LMFT (licensed marriage and family therapist). They can cost between $75 to $200+. If you are strapped for cash you can ask for resident counselors who are working on their MFT license, but still trained in couples counseling. A resident counselor is less expensive most of the time. Also, I would imagine that there are some universities around Dallas that have graduate counseling programs. Call some of the school and ask if they have such programs and if the graduate counselors do free or reduced counseling. Finally, as many have said, many churches will do premarital counseling. I worked for one that did excellent premarital counseling and you did not have to subscribe to their beliefs at all.
