I disagree with everyone else. I think the first birthday is one of the most special!!! Do a duckie themed party. Plates, napkins, ruber duckies, make a cake that looks like a pool or a bathtub with rubber duckies, and blue (or pink) and yellow (depending on baby's sex). It is not that they will remember or not,it's that you are celebrating the first year of their lives and they will want to know how they celebrated their first birthday. Be sure to take a picture of your baby on their birthday too (and every year,) to track how much they have grown. Take it in front of the same tree, or same doorway, in the same bathing suit (the one your grandma gave you when you were 14), etc..... Make it a special day for all and celebrate the magic moments you had with your child this first year!!!
Congratulations!!!! Have fun!!

Well the baby is still small, and will not remember anything. So I think that a nice gathering at your home is best for 1 year old parties. When they get older is is fun to throw them big parties at Chickie Cheese or Fun time America. Try finding a character that can come to your house, and entertain the kids. Buy some balloons and party bags, cake ice cream, and call it a day. I have two girls and their bdays are a month apart. I did the home parties until my older one turned 3 they were lots of fun for everyone. My family would come and they all brang a dish( which prevents me from cooking all day) have fun!

My son's first birthday party was a nightmare! Everyone was coming at 3pm but as he was so excited with all the new toys etc. he never had a nap so by the time everyone arrived he was in a really cranky mood & ended up being put into bed & missing the party!!

My guess is that baby will be oblivious to all the fuss.
So, have a party for yourself.
For being a good mum.
Invite about 6 or so good friends - and a few offspring.
Treat the adults to some comfort food and a little booze. Some soothing music and spend the time telling yourselves how good you are.
Mums are magic.

As one year old babies are too young to know what a first birthday is, have the party for the Mum's in your baby circle - celebrate surviving the first year of colic, teething, sleepless nights, endless nappies, formula and bottles, irritable Dad's, well meaning (but interfering) mothers in law..... If possible get a sitter to baby sit and all of you go out for an afternoon or evening without baby and enjoy a night of freedom.

For my sons 1st birthday, all I did was have a small party at our house. We didnt do any theme either. He didnt know any different. He didnt even want to eat his cake. Wait until your lil one turns 2 before you go all out for a party. At least that way they will somewhat remember.

For my daughters 1st birthday I took and tied a bunch of balloons together and tied a message to it to keep it safe from weather damage. And ask someone to tell us where it ended up.
Very neat. You can buy tanks for this with balloons in the box.

my boy has just had his 1st party and we were preserised to haveing a big family - it was too much for him and us - keep it to a few family and friends or if that is a problem have two !!!!!!!! one for family and one for friends - the main thing is to keep the excitement for your boy to minimal - he wont enjoy it otherwise - there are plenty more loud fun parties ahead !!!!!!!!!!
good luck and happy birthday to your little boy
