screw the factors!!! i am with you.... molest a child..... go to jail and face their molestors!! it makes no sense to me. A local man hit and ran (drinking) killing a young boy.... 6 months.... the very next story on the news.... an off-duty cop trying to stop a fight (outside a club) and a guy with a small knife stabbed him... he is alive and he got sentenced to over a year.... does that make sense?
I live in Canada

I think you did miss something. First, sentences against high-level sex offenders are disproportionately high across the spectrum, because in the last 10 years legislators have just kept jacking up the sentences (especially with mandatory minima), because who cares about sex offenders? If this person was truly a sex offender, he will also have to register, might have residency restrictions and/or notification requirements, and will be branded with that label for the rest of his or her life.
Nonetheless, are you sure it was molestation? What was the nature of the charge? You say "molesting a small child," but do you know the facts underlying that charge? Was it one kid? What were the facts--oftentimes children are very prone to suggestion, and if it's only a kids testmony that he was touched in inappropriate places (i.e. no penetration, no other physical evidence or DNA) then that case is not very strong... it may have been pleaded down because the chances of conviction were very very low.
On the other hand, the shoplifter may have attempted to steal something very valuable, the judge may have seen him before and warned him "next time I see you you're going away for a while," and followed up on that promise.
As noted above, each case is unique, and without all the underlying facts related to the crime and criminal history, it's very difficult to make generalizations about different offenders and offenses.

Firstly I'd love to know what country you live in. I live in Australia and every Sunday I read the paper and think like you. Recently a 22 year old guy got 9 months for raping a 11month old baby girl. It was the mothers defacto partner and not his child. Next page was 44 year old male gets 61/2 years for growing cannabis at his home. Makes me sick. By the way I don't smoke pot, nor do I condone its use, But still it seems very unfair to that tiny little princess

I think that the laws reflect the standing of pedophilia in this society. I don't think shoplifting is a more serious crime than pedophelia and you don't either but somewhere sometime someone did. It's things like these that require an uprising by people like you and me who are OUTRAGED by the twisted justice. I don't really appreciate Oprah on her soapbox much of the time but her series on catching sexual predators is great. She pays something like $100k or 50k for her "10 most wanted" sexual predator list. As a society we aren't outraged enough.

A number of factors are considered in sentencing. Crimes in a particular category are compared, whereas crimes in separate categories are not.
What you need to do is campaign by contacting the papers, your representatives in Congress, local law enforcement groups, MADD and any one else that will listen, and demand a higher minimum sentence for such crimes.
As it stands, the judge must follow sentencing guidelines that are laid down to standardise punishment; if the guidelines and laws do not allow tougher punishment for crimes society considers to be more heinous, the judge's hands are tied. We have to change the laws, then s/he can do their part in sentencing.

Well, possibly if someone sexually molested my child and I caught him, I would spend the rest of my life in jail.
Justice in this world is hard to come by.
