It really depends on the neighborhood. There are really nice areas of Phoenix and really bad areas. Same with Mesa, though it is much smaller. I prefer Phoenix because it is central. Mesa is too far south and east. Within Phoenix, I would steer clear of anything too far south or too central. North central Phoenix is pretty nice and affordable, east Phoenix is nice too (close to Scottsdale) but a little more expensive. Scottsdale is nice, too! Tempe is nice, college atmosphere, but more expensive than Mesa.

Phoenix is a better place to live, but it also depends what part. And whats cheaper and what's better is sort of two seperate questions. But technically Mesa is a town IN phoenix...you can get the best or the worst of both worlds depending on where you ar elooking. South Central Phoenix, im sure a lot dirtier than a lot of places in Mesa but it goes both ways. Glendale has some reasonably priced places and it's closer to Scottsdale/PV area

Phoenix is cheaper than Mesa in most areas. But, just like any city, there are good and bad parts of town. I have lived in Mesa for about 8 years now, and I really like it. Some of the areas are pretty bad, like around Main Street areas, but there are some of the most beautiful homes there. I suggest going closer to the Superstition Mountains. If you are going to live in Phoenix, avoid downtown (obviously) there are some really scary areas in Phoenix that you just have to get out of.
FYI: When I lived with my parent 2 years ago, my car got stolen from my front yard in one of the best heighborhoods in Mesa. Then when I moved out on my own a couple miles away, it got stolen again. So crime can happen anywhere, especially stolen cars.
I love Arizona, and I dont plan on ever moving. Cities I suggest is Scottsdale, there are some great priced home around there. Gilbert, newer city but pretty. Chandler, huge homes if you want to spend money. Litchfield Park, also huge houses. And also Anthem if you want community lving, but that is way north, almost to New River.

It depends on what area of Phoenix or Mesa. I will say this however, Mesa is a pretty bad area for the most part. I lived there for a few years and it was hell, I had to get out. Had many break ins, an attempted rape, my car vandalized etc.. It was a cesspool of crime. I would steer clear of there for better places.

If you are looking for a quiet, magic little place to live in the Phoenix area, my advice is to try the Papago Rocks area. Papago Apartments may be an interesting little place to live, postal code 85008. I spent some good time there, and it's quiet and somehow far away from it all without being far away from anything at all.

There must be two towns name Mesa in Arizona! The one I'm familiar with is clean, with friendly people, and it's sunsets and views of the Superstition mountains are beautiful.
