Starved Rock and Matthiessan State Parks are just southwest of Chicago on I-80. They're both quite pretty and look like nothing you'd expect in Illinois - big cliffs with waterfalls (although in winter, the waterfalls are frozen.)
Milwaukee is also a nice side trip - a very classic city. Or, going the other direction, Madison and Lake Geneva are very pretty.
The Indiana State Dunes aren't exactly "pretty" but they're interesting, east of Chicago about ninety miles - large sand dunes that make "whistling" sounds as the water and wind hits them. Better in summer than winter, however.
Beyond that, unfortunately, there isn't a lot around Chicago. The Great Plains don't make the most dynamic setting. But Chicago itself is gorgeous.

Madison, Wisconsin is only a 2-3 hour drive away and it has a lot to offer. On your way there, you could stop and see some nice towns. But this wouldn't take 2-3 days, I don't think. Then again, you could get there through Milwaukee, which has some nice new things (like a beautiful art museum) so that may be fun.
If it wasn't this time of year, I'd recommend going to see the Indiana dunes, but that's better in the Spring/Summer.

Are you a football fan? The Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame is very good and just a few hours north of Chicago.
Shopping for Christmas? Drive to Minneapolis and go to the Mall of America.
Like museums about America? Go to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan (just outside of Detroit).

The House on the rock is neat to see. I'm not sure how far from Chicago it is. I used to live in Kenosha WI I think it was about 2 hours from there north.
