I've owned pretty much all the major brands, and my recommendation for a homeowner would be either the Stihl 26 or 29 (farmboss), both around 300-325 dollars, or one of the mid-size Husquarvanas which are around the same price. Echo, which is available at Home Depot is O.K., especially for the price and Jonsered, which is only available at outdoor equipment shops is good too. The lesser brands such as Poulan, Ryobi, and McCulloch are pretty much not worth the effort it takes to get them home.

it depends on how many hours you plan on putting on the saw. if your looking for something to make a living with...husquavarna, stil and johnsared are tough and long lasting. if you just tinkering occasionally with one...a poulan with an 18"bar, is a good reliable saw with a low price. you can basically consider it a disposable saw. after cutting a few years of many pulp cord...the saw wears out...you buy a new one...and still have not paid on two saws an equivalent to the high price of one of the before mentioned saws.
