You have to contact the main corporate headquarters and try to find the right person there. Most large stores don't deal with individual manufacturers because their suppliers do that. Suppliers probably wont take a small time manufacturer seriously either.
You should look for a good channel representative in your field because they have the connections to get you into stores. Make sure your product is really good. Its also going to cost you pretty big chunk of change.

Most large stores have a purchasing manager. You can ask a store manager who does the buying for that store. Large chains like target, walmart, best buy etc have head offices. That would be where the person would be who decides what the stores should carry. I assume you have done extensive marketing research for your product. They will want to see your research on market share, your target market, cost projections, their profit share, and product availability, quality assurance, and any test market results. Have you considered starting with smaller companies first.

Large corporations have all things like that through their headquarters. You need to contact the HQ for each particular store. Stores have buyers, and then the buyers purchase the items in bulk, which are then sent to the distribution centers and then to the stores. Going to a store and talking to a store manager will get you nowhere--they have no control over what is sent to their building and stores are just told how to merchandise the product and then stock it. Good luck!

For Best Buy, they have a portal website for suppliers. To get there, go to their main webpage (bestbuy.com), then navigate to About Best Buy (a link at the bottom), on the side of that popup window is a link for Supplier Portal.

Target has a site for partners and vendors:
http://sites.target.com/site/en/corporate/page.jsp?contentId=PRD03-001090

Kmart vendor resources:
http://www.kmartcorp.com/corp/business/vendor/vendorSupport.stm

You can usually find this information on the retailer's website under their corporate information.
