For instance, McDonald's offers quick, cheap food, and now they are a household (world-wide) name. But I don't understand the "model" part of it. If anyone knows how this works please let me know. Thank you!

McDonald's uses "Franchise Business Model". Their business depends on the Franchises they give. They manage the overall organization, provide the infra but the running of the outlets is done by the Franchisee.
