Follow Georges advice. POWER OFF! At the very bottom of the disposal there is a place in the center where you can stick a wrench to turn it manually, clearing the problem out. Usually, it's a allen wrench, which is just a metal tube with a hexagonal end on it that you stick in the matching hole on the bottom of the disposal.
You move it back and forth to get it loose. Then look for the red reset button on the unit, and press that good. Run the water, turn it on.
Oh...and my guess is there is a spoon or something in there...grits alone won't plug it up like that.

Have you run the unit lately? Garbage Disposals can seize if not used with at least semi-regularity.
Turn off the power to the unit at the switch and also at the breaker/fuse.
Using extreme caution, as the blades can be VERY sharp, examine the interior of your unit with a flashlight to see if something has blocked the blades.
If you find something is blocking the blades, remove it gently with long handled pliers.
If you don't see anything blocking the blades it is likely the shaft has seized. Use a pair of long handled pliers to (gently) try and move the blades back and forth and get the shaft moving freely.
if you are able to get the shaft moving somewhat, clear everything out of the unit and with the water running, apply power to the unit. If you are lucky, it may resume normal operation.
If still does not turn, replace the unit.

you should have a handle that fits into a hole or groove under the garbage disposal so you can turn it. when you can turn it freely then you know it is unjammed. then find a red button that is located somewhere on the disposal and press it. that is your reset button for the motor. turn the power off before you do all of this.
after you do all of this then turn the power back on and it should work. if it doesn't then do the whole thing over until it does!!
