Half way down to the cuticle on the inside, or the outside (ouch). You can get Silk wrap kits at Sally Beauty Supply and most drug stores. Problem is, it takes a little experience to do it well enough to look decent. If you haven't broken the hyponechium you are probably bestoff in filing it down and waiting for it to regrow. If there is torn skin, you don't want an infection.

If at home, apply some glue. Yes, glue...crazy glue works best but be careful.
When you can, see a manicurist and get her to apply gel or acrylic to keep it bonded together until the split grows well past the hyponicium (skin under the edge of nail, or 'quick') so you can trim it.

gently file it so the broken edge doesn't "catch" on anything and keep it covered with a band-aid until it grows out. leave the band-aid off at night so some air gets to it. if you go to the nail salon you might get some funky fungus 'cause the nail bed is exposed and weak

go to the RX and get your self something called aquaphor healing ointment and put a little on the nail and cover overnight with band aids or something. repeat this for a few nights you should see it improving. my hubby has the same thing and it works for him except you have to be patient with it cause it doesn't happen over night k...good luck
