Are you just trying to simplify? double negatives cancel out

=(-3) - (-7) - (6a^2 - 4a) - (-1) + (-8a) + 1
= - 3 + 7 - 6a^2 + 4a + 1 - 8a +1
combining like terms (making sure you keep the signs together
= ( -3 + 7 +1 + 1) + (6a^2) + (4a - 8a)
= (+6) + (6a^2) + (-4a)
Moving things around to normal view
=6a^2 - 4a +6

Did you need to simplify futher? Find the zeros?

If this is the type of problem that I think it is, this is how you solve it. I am not sure how to explain the last solving step, but it's written out so you can look at your notes and possibly understand it from there. It's possible the teacher might be looking for just a simplification which is also listed here before setting it to zero, it just depends on what you are studying how far you would take this equation. I have studied all the way through high school and college algebra, so it depends on what level you are on if you will need all of this or not. Either way, I hope this helps you. Here goes:

-3-(-7)-(6a^2-4a)-(-1)+(-8a)+1

First any - times a + is a negative and any - times a - is a positive. So first simplification step is this:

-3+7-6a^2+4a+1-8a+1

Then just combine like terms like this:

-3+7+1+1=6 ; -6a^2 ; 4a-8a=-4a

so it now looks like this:

6-6a^2-4a

For simplification, put it in a^2+a+1 format:

-6a^2-4a+6

If you only needed it simplified, this is as far as you would have to go, but if the rest of this looks familar to what you've been studying, then this is how you continue.

Set it equal to zero:

-6a^2-4a+6=0

Then solve from there.

(3a-1)(a+3)=0

3a-1=0 and a+3=0

a=1/3 and a=-3
