when you are on the outside looking in especially in a different country then anyone can seem self-righteous and obnoxious. I can think of several nationalities that have been known for this negative behavior. If you don't know every single person from a country then you should not be so condescending. I don't think I'm an American, born in the USA and I don't think I'm better than anyone else regardless of their nationalities. I am smart enough to know each culture has different views and values and therefore I do not pass judgment. A person would have to show me negative behavior before I would consider them obnoxious but I wouldn't say it was all of them.

Because we are if you want a simple answer. For a more complex answer all you have to do is look around and see what America has done to improve and help the world compared to any other nation in the written history of mankind. Now don't be stupid and start to mention some of the bad stuff the US has done because all nations have not been perfect in history. The reallity of the fact is that Americans have proven to be the most generous, most intelligent (look at the science and inventions), the kindest, the most industrious people in the history of mankind so, yes we, generally speaking, are better than everyone else.

The term "American" is too broad of a term to be used when asking a question of this sort. An American is a person from the two large continents on the westwern hemisphere. How can you even make such a broad assumption? Have you even met with even 1% of the American population? Or do you just digest what the television would like you to feed?

I'm guessing you're referring to such examples as: "We're number one!" shouted at every patriotic event, and things like Hollywood films that always portray the US as saving the planet (I cite Independence Day, among many others).

It's part of the insulated culture, the emphasis on patriotism, the FACT that few Americans travel outside their home country (Disneyworld is the Mecca here, apparently...:/)

Our government continually PREACHES to us that we're the best, the greatest, the first, the biggest, etc etc ad nauseum.

Those of us who have lived and traveled abroad know the real deal. Those of us who have ties to countries who are or were typically and consistently reviled by the US Gov't see even more of where it's coming from.

I guess it's called brainwashing, indoctrination, a discouragement for travel abroad. Some nationalism is vital for any healthy country, but the US has serious problems in this regard.

Finally, I want to add that while it's easy to do so, don't be too hard on Americans in this regard. I say this because they are born with blinders on and can't or in many cases are not allowed or exposed to other views. This is tragic but not entirely their fault. There aren't many renegades such as myself who break through the glass to see the greatness of other places! so, I tend to feel a little sorry for my countrymen. That is, when I am not entirely annoyed with them.

"WE" Dont think we are better than everyone else. "I" dont think I am better than anyone else.

That to me is a statement you should bring up with each individual, and ask them why. I am proud to be an American, and if pride in ones country is what makes everyone say that we think we are better, than I am sorry for that. But I don't think America is better than any other country, we are all alike.

We don't think we are better than everyone else, but we are just as good or bad as everyone else.

Apparently you've been meeting the Ugly American type. We're not all like that. Believe me, a good many of us are quite disgusted at various aspects of our culture, foreign policies, values, etc.

from ana early age, each american is endoctrinated to believe this national doctrine. we are the best nation on the face of the earth. just consider the # of immigrants who have left each continent to come to america to partake in democracy, freedom, and liberty. the united states is called the nation of nations, meaning that we admit people from each country of the world. the same cannot be said of other countreis.
