In addition to what the good doctor suggests, you might want to look into the possibility that it's not a bacterial infection at all. Many, if not most, chronic sinus infections are caused by the body's immune response to fungus infection in the mucus. This would, of course, be treated quite differently. Never, ever take antibiotics unless it's absolutely the last resort... they screw up your intestinal tract in a bad way. BTDT.

I did not see your previous question. I treat sinus infections with a 10 day course of an antibiotic from the quinolone family which includes ciprofloxacin (Cipro), levofloxacin (Levaquin), and moxifloxacin (Avelox) among others. I use quinolones as these have the best bone penetration of all oral antibiotics and you must pentrate bone to reach the interior of a sinus cavity. Antibiotics such as penicillin and amoxicillin are completely ineffective for sinusitis. If there is swelling of the turbinates (the lining) in the nose I prescribe nasal corticosteroids because the ostium (openings) of the sinuses is between these folds and they will not remain open if the turbinates are swollen. The use of decongestants is uncommon now that nasal decongestants are available because the latter are more effective and have no systemic side effects since they are not absorbed to any degree into the body. Antihistamines are rarely used today and when they are they should only be used if the drainage is thin as they tend to thicken drainage which could obstruct the ostium of a sinus and prevent the infection from clearing. If I use an antihistamine I prefer to use azelastine which is a nasal spray rather than an oral antihistamine again due to the issue of side effects. There are times that I will prescribe an oral corticosteroid such as prednisone, prednisolone, or methylprednisolone depending upon the examination. If a sinus infection does not clear with a quinolone antibiotic I consider the possibility of a polyp or cyst blocking the ostium and this is identified on computed tomography (CT scan). Simple x-rays of the sinuses are seldom of benefit. If you have additional or more specific questions please let me know.

I just had my very first sinus infection and it was terrible. I went to the doctor twice.....the first time I wasn't given enough antibiotics. The second time with more antibiotics and nasal spray and it was cleared up.

-Take a tea prepared by boiling one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in 2 cup of water till it is reduced to half. Take 3 to 4 cups daily during severe sinus attack.
-Drink plenty of fluids to help keep your mucus thin.

Depends: bacterial ones can be given antibiotics but viral ones have no cure, you can only treat symptoms.
What kind are you talking about ?
