last year the fans whined about having too many reruns throughout the season. ABC had started the season early last year, adn even though they did 24 episodes (which is a pretty long season for a normal show) they did have quite a few weeks between Sept and May when they were running reruns... so this year they decided to they decided to do 6 episodes in the beginning of the season aand then take a hiatus till feb. Then they'll play the the last 18 episodes all back to back with no reruns.

This is the official reason:
After something "that will fry everybody's brain" (Lindelhof at the San Diego ComicCon), the show will take a thirteen-week hiatus and return in February for 17 straight episodes. "When Lost is on, it's on," said Carlton Cuse in the May 26, 2006, Official LOST Podcast. This should help lessen some viewer frustration from all the reruns last season.
This way we will get to watch 17 straight episodes.

They got so many complaints about all the reruns last year that they decided to just stop the show now and then start it back up in Feb. The good thing about it is when it does come back on, it'll stay on thru May.

actually they stopped lost because they got so many complaints last season because they showed so many re-runs through out the season...so they cut it in half so that there is a nail bitting ending twice instead of three times and it opens up room for another program that if it survives next season will probably be put on right after lost ends even though it's not technically the change of season's for tv.

They didn't want to have to do any repeats during the Holidays so they just decided to do a Fall finale. When it comes back on we will get like 20 new episodes in a row. Can't wait!

yeah, i'm pissed about it too. it's just some bullshit marketing ploy. and they had the audacity to put LOST previews into that groundhog day rippoff to get us to watch it. whoever came up with that idea should be punched in the face. anyway, they're starting up the rest of season 3 sometime in february, and, unless they try to pull this stunt all over again, they should play the rest of the season.

I guess they want to show reruns for those you haven't been watching the show. I think they said..16 new episodes.
