an x ray will show if it is broken and you need a cast if it is -- if it is a sprain or break use the R.I.C.E. method of care --Rest, Ice, Compression, & Elevation ---obviously not going to compress if it is broken -- but stay off and ice and take pain meds as needed. If it hurts too much it will not heal quickly so do what you can to alleviate the pain!! g'luck and I hope it is not broken! Wrap in tensor bandages if sprained to help to imobilize it and crompress it to help reduce/remove the swelling---ice, elevation, and compression help reduce the swelling and aid the healing.
ps. I know this as I broke my leg just about the ankle this September and am still coping with it!!!

Your ankle may not be broken, but if it is hurting you, the crutches are a good idea. That way you can keep weight off the ankle and still get around. If there is an urgent care clinic, that might be a better choice than an emergency room. If you can move it, even a little bit, it's probably not broken.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Can you set your weight on it at all? Even for a moment?

If in 24 hours you still cannot put any weight on it, it should be xrayed to be sure. Be sure to keep ice on it and take asparin to keep the pain down.

I Broke my ankle five years ago, the leg bones on the inside and the outside. My foot dropped sideways when I tried to lift it. So I have a little experience. BUT, I had no pain when it broke.
Weird don't you think.

I might also add that sprains can be very painful.

Not being able to see it....I can only say that if it were broken it would be horribly swollen and the pain would be unbearable. I don't think you have anything like that from what you posted. I've had a broken ankle. So you just need some Ibuprofen, ice and crutches.

Best remedy RICE - Rest Ice Compression Elevation. That is if it's not broken. Personally I would ask for an x-ray when your parents take you in to see the doctor that's the only sure way to tell if it's broken or not.

sprains hurt more then breaks.
keep ice on it tho (10min straight, with 5 min breaks inbetween)
use a bandage to support it
elevate it
crutches are a good idea. try not to put weight on it

first of all you need to go to a doctor for him to figure out whether it is broken or sprained. then follow his advice. take your father along and he can hear everything the doctor says.
