It's probably U2, i dont think any two of their songs sound alike, i could be wrong, but they are really good musicians and how they formed is like a prodigy - they were a band before they could play any instrument

STEELY DAN...well not the best band, but not too far from the top - but they're also American, who are not on your favo(u)rite list of late, as all your first five questions have been about the 'wrongs' of Americans...

Definitely up for debate, and depends on one's taste. I am not a huge U2 fan, however I do have a number of other favorite bands/artists including (in no particular order):

Bob Dylan, The Doors, Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, The Mars Volta, Bright Eyes, Led Zeppelin, Violent Femmes, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Radiohead, Spoon, The Beatles, Elliott Smith, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, The Libertines, Flaming Lips, Nick Drake, Joy Division, and Arcade Fire.

Sorry, I know that's a huge list, but I love them all and trust me they all rock. But if I had to pick one, I would go with The Beatles. Most important, most versatile, most legendary. Dylan would be a close second with his unmatched songwriting ability.

The best band today I think would be Modest Mouse, because they are fun, intelligent, creative, and different.

Personally, I do rather like U2, though my favorites would have to be (not in favour order):
I) Iron Maiden
II) Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
III) The Rolling Stones
IV) Judas Priest
V) Metalica
VI) The Beatles
VII) Everything David Bowie was in
VIII) Everthing Eric Clapton was in
IX) AC/DC
X) Meatloaf
XI) Pink Floyd
XII) Queen
XIII) The Eagles
XIV) Prince

Basically, if it has instruments, I am happy.
I highly recommend all of these bands.

I agree U2 is my fave band. and while all their songs don't sound alike. U2 definitely has a sound. While I am not as crazy about their new stuff as I am about the old socially conscience stuff I still love them. just had to add.. I love Prince but Prince is not a band. In addition, Comparing Newer bands to U2 is ridiculous... no comparison. Sorry

I disagree. I've heard a few U2 songs that sound the same. When they come on the radio, I know it's them, but it takes me a while to figure out what song it is. I do, however, like their cover of "Beat On The Brat" by The Ramones.

The Smiths, without a question of a doubt. U2 were good until they started going all American and left their Irish roots. The song they did with Boyzone did them no favours whatsoever - what were they thinking of???????
