Why would you want to put a fluid under pressure?

Well, without fluids under pressure we would have no hydraulics for power steering, no power brakes, no water pressure in our water mains, no way to get gas from the tank to the engine in our cars, etc.

If humans were to ever visit Jupiters oceans, we would have to be in a ship, sealed tight, and breathe a fluid that is pressurized to match the pressure on the outside of the ship. They would have to be very close.

Far-out application, but valid =)

There are plenty of more practical applications. Hydraulics for instance.

If I had a real REAL important purpose I wanted the fluid to perform, I'd consider putting it under pressure to see how it performed. One way would be to stand behind it and yell insulting things. Or I might "play" with a long, sharp knife. It really doesn't matter------fluids are notoriously unable to keep a stiff upper lip.
