O is the universal donor. It doesn't present the A or B antigens on the surface of its cells, therefore anyone who has O, A, B, or AB type blood can have O blood transfused and not suffer an adverse reaction.

Type O blood means that red blood cells do not express either of type A or type B antigens, and thus, people with type O blood express ANTI-A and ANTI-B antibodies naturally!

People with type A blood only express Anti-B antibodies, and people with type B blood express Anti-A antibodies, and those with AB express NEITHER Anti-A nor Anti-B antibodies. This means that ANYONE can receive blood with neither antigen (we call it type O) since there is no antigen to make antibody against.
