I think the artists like Page, Hendrix, Clapton etc... are all in their own category because they were pioneers and were doing things before others were that influenced today's players. Anyone since all them can't even go in the same category... strictly apples and oranges.

My personal top 2 are Kirk Hammet of Metallica and Eddie Van Halen, both for their amazing talent and inginuity, as well as the influence they've had in the last 2 or 3 decades of guitar playing. For those that doubt Kirk (especially in the last few years), watch a live version of his solo at the end of For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Also Joe Satriani because of his versatility, but with Kirk having learned from him, surpassed Joe's skill level in the later years.

I love Jimmy Page. He's inventive and clever, and a wiz on the acoustic guitar.

But Cream-era Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix pretty much defined how the electric guitar works, even today. They are the two unsurpassed electric guitarists of all time.

I must agree but Hendrix is a very close second. When asked, I normally say 'Jimmy' and leave others to complete the name.

I would also say Jimmy Page.

Paul Kossoff was also a contender.

There are many 'Guitar Heros' so you can't say any one person is the best.

Definitely Nancy Wilson of Heart.

Stairway to Heaven, which Jimmy Page wrote, has a satanic message when played backwards, and I won't listen to that anymore, Led Zepplin are agents of the devil.
