A Scarlet letter was a type of brand sewn on the clothing of people found guilty of lust and or adultery. Didn't take much for
them to be found guilty by the courts of the day. It was shortly after, or during, the times when they were burning people as witches. People just gotta have their entertainment.

The "A" was for adultery and the source is Nathanial Hawthorn's book the Scarlet Letter.
But if I remember correctly he states in the beginning of the book (correct me if I'm mistaken) that the historical act of the Puritans (Hawthorn's real life progenitors-I think he wrote in the early 1800's) giving out the mark was an unsubstantiated tale and that weather it was a cattle brand or a sewn on letter(like in his fictional story) depended on which person told the tale.
If this is so and me thinks it tis, is there any other source for its historic accuracy, a primary source(1st hand account)?

It is the letter "A" for adultery that was sewn to the breast of adulterers. You can read about this in Hawthorne's book of the same name.
