We have 10 can lights in our kitchen that uses floodlight style bulbs. We have matched the wattage of the bulbs with the receptacles. We buy floodlight bulbs rated for 2000 hours life compared to 750 hours life of a standard bulb. We try to be good about turning the lights off when not in use. Yet, it seems like the floodlight bulbs burn out much quicker than the standard bulbs. Anyone know why this is and how we can improve their lifetime?

Check the voltage on the bulbs you're putting in, most people never look and get 120volt bulbs, you need to get bulbs rated for 130volts, you should still be able to go with a Par 30 - 50 or 65 watt bulb, Just make sure you get 130volt bulbs they last longer and can withstand a voltage surge. In all actuality turning lights on and off is what kills the bulb, on = Heat to filament----off = No heat, this continuous cycle makes the filaments weak so the more you turn off and on a light the shorter the bulb will last.

Probably too much heat buildup in the can light. try step down in wattage or try another brand. even if you are within the wattage recommended for your can, the heat maybe too high. a 60 watts halogen produce much more heat then a normal 60 watts.

also check that your bulb are good up to 130 volt. if they are rated 120 volts they will last less longer.

electricity company do not always deliver constant 120 volt. That can vary up - down and burn the bulb.

^^ I'm sure that has something to do with it...however, alot of people accidentally leave those lights on because its hard to tell whether they are on in the daylight and most normally their switch is inside of the house. Also, you may want to look into halogen lights....they last for a really long time.

some bulbs cant be touched. you have to inst them with a paper towel or something similar. The oils from your hands cause shorter lighting time.

it has been my experience that when that happens that either the fixture has "gone bad" (not likely if its all of them) or they could be wired incorrectly.
