Tattooing - the fact is tattoos are permanent and they get ugly as you age, the colors go away, the skin wrinkles. To remove them cost a fortune.
I think the general perception as change they are not just on bikers or convicts anymore but even though many people have them I think it is best to keep them on parts of your body that are covered up in normal business wear.
Piercings - no problems with piercings unless you look like a lightning rod or a zipper. A few are fine...I went to a fast food place and counted-- a worker at the counter had 47 piercings on her face and ears. It was disgusting. I did not buy food their.
Tongue piercings are unhealthy.

Althought tattooing and body piercing are no longer new there are still people from previous generations who are not accustomed to this form of art.
I think it's a combination of how extreme the tattoos and piercing are that make for unpopular opinion. That plus there are a lot of conservatives out there who cannot conceive of doing anything of such permanent adornment just in case you change your mind.
More and more people are changing though as with every thing that is new. Piercing that does not mutilate and tattoos that do not have vulgar or violent expression are becoming more and more an acceptible art form.
Personally, i don't go for the piercing because of the health issues involved. I do quite like tattoos as those that are in good taste and well done are works of art. I got my first tat to celebrate being kid free at age 38. It took me 10 years to convince my soon to be ex husband that this is my body and if I wanted a tattoo then I should have one. 4 years later I got the 2nd and I'm ready for my third.
With regard to the comment about wrinkles and fading....
select a place on your body less prone to wrinkles. Both of mine are on my right calf. As for fading....if the tattoo is not well done and or exposed to a lot of sun then there will be fading. If you intend to spend good money on a tat then it should be taken care of to retain the beauty. I used spf 45 sunscreen applied with a q tip on both of my tats when I am in shorts. They look as good now as they did when I first got them.
As for wrinkles...well, LOL my calves won't be headed south so fast as the rest of my body so when I am 90 in a nursing home I'll bet you can still tell my 6 inch tall TEXAS bluebonnet and 4 inche tall butterfly still look like a bluebonnet and butterfly.
