I read some months back (of course when I wasn't an Answers member) that "the cornea of the eye is transparent & colourless because of a protein that locks on growth factors- material the body produced to stimulate blood vessel formation."

If this is true then how come some people have bloodshot eyes? And how are these caused?

The cornea is avascular ,it takes its nutrition by diffusion . However, the dilation of the blood vessels in the conjunctiva ,the layer that overlies the sclera, gives the impression of redness in blood shot eyes as a result of conjunctivitis.

From Health Central:

"Bloodshot eyes appear red because the vessels in the surface of the white portion of the eye (sclera) become enlarged and irritated. This may result from extremely dry air, sun exposure, dust, foreign body, an allergic reaction, infection, trauma, or other conditions."
