1st of all you need to make sure your laptop has wireless capabilities if not you can get a usb stick witch gets you the signal (about 10 pound on eBay) then you need to be in an area witch offers wireless Internet like your own home if you have a wireless router (I'm with BT and i got a free router WIth option 2) or any where you see wi-fi some trains have it or cafe bars and hotels. if you are in your own home it costs you your subscription monthly charge. however on a train for example the price will be included in the ticket price

The first thing you need is a wireless router or a place with wireless connection.
Usually, a laptop has a built in wireless. If your laptop doesn't have any built in wireless, you need to buy one. I recommend you to buy Belkin Wireless Network Card.

some laptops have built in wireless internet connect... others you need a pcmcia card to slide in the side of the laptop.
either way, you will still need to have yourself or be near someone that has a highspeed connection with a wireless router connected.
