I don't know about smells, but I did buy these things that emit a high-frequency shrieking sound. All people and household pets (non-rodent pets) can hear is a small buzzing sound when you get close to it. I found it in a home-improvement store. You may find it in any regular wal-mart or something. All I know about smells is that dogs don't like the smell of ammonia.

Irish Spring soap works really well. Shave some from a bar with a potato peeler and distribute where needed. No kidding, it is very effective!
