Lord Peter Death Bredon Wimsey. Motto: As my whimsy takes me. I am reading one of Dorothy L Sayers books now - Unnatural Death. I think she beats Agatha Christie because her characters are much better written and he is a much more rounded personality.
Better still is Margery Allingham - Campion is as believable or not as Wimsey, but the writing stays with you after you shut the book in a way that the other Golden Age writers don't. She captures the feeling of the age so perfectly.
