I am kind of in a tight spot financially and one of my friends told me to write a letter describing my situation. At the end of this letter I should ask for $1-$5 to be sent to my p.o. box to help out. Not only does this seem extremely pathetic to me, and I doubt anyone will actually do it, is it even legal? If it works it could definatly help out.

This is not illegal in any state as long as you dont lie or mislead anyone in any way.

I did something like this, and regardless of the legality, it doesn't work. I sent out over 5000 letters and got $3 back. It ends up that you spend way more in postage and address lists than anyone that will help you is willing to pay back.

it's MLM scam and it barely works...

best thing to do is.. go out there and bantor for change.. it's amazing what those folks make! you see them... they stand there with buckets.. going.. change ? change? i am out of work.. i have no insurance...

if you do that.. i'm unsure though.. you must let go of your integredy and be ballsy... anyways.. i heard in some cases... those folks make so much they have to write it off on their taxes.. AND some do register to have you get that back during tax time as a refund.

sort of like the salvation army.. but it's an independant.

i'm not sure how that works you'd actually have to find out about that.. someplace....

but don't let some of those "poor homeless folks" fool you.. i seen some leave at the end of the day.. pack up... follow them to their freaking mercedes!

no kidding.

or sell your stuff on ebay? or do some donation thing... set it up so folks can get a write off at the end of the year in their taxes and do it up in your paypal account?

there's a billion possibilities.

no kidding.

kinda shameless but... in this day and age... i'm not surprised.

As pathetic as it may sound, it is only illegal if you put something in the letter that is not true or is an attempt to defraud people of money.

I think that your time would be better spent looking into some other lines of help...

There are food pantries, churches, Knights of Columbus, etc. that all may be able to help you get through this tight spot.

Good Luck

Yes I believe that this is illegal.

Pan handling is not a very ethical or legal practice. Check out this link for further info: http://www.communityinterest.org/backgrounders/panhandling.htm

You can get in trouble. If I were you I would not do it.....

It's probably legal, but probably wouldn't work. They say it "doesn't hurt to ask" but the problem is with the answers you'll probably get. Best wishes.
