Yes. These are known as "Driveby Downloads". These are not common because they are easy for newer and better Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs to detect and block or remove.

The most common and best way to infect is using a link you must click. This usually is for a download of something legit and the Malware is included in the download. This makes it difficult for the AV and AS programs to recognize until it is installed and doing its damage.

The free Site Advisor program provided by McAfee will warn you of sites that install malware or provide links to sites that download malware. It will also tell you if the site causes you to receive lots of spam after signing in or registering.

Yes. This is one of the many most common ways people can get spyware. Nowadays, spyware is more common than viruses. It is essential that you have at LEAST 2 AS (antispyware) programs. And one of them should have real time protection to protect you from "driveby" downloads. I recommend that you have 3 AS programs. These 3 would be:

1) Ad-Aware SE Personal from LavaSoft. Free and effective.
2) Spybot Search and Destroy from SaferNetworking. Free with Real Time protection (though not recommended to have real time enabled with spybot)
3) Windows Defender from Microsoft. Microsoft's new AS program has an excellent real time protector and should be enabled.

Even though having these programs greatly reduces our chances of getting spyware, it is still not impossible. We must be able to search in a smart and effective way. These 2 programs will help!

1) Mozilla Firefox. Built on the Mozilla engine, this fairly new browser is a great alternative to Internet Explorer. It is much safer and guards against most drive by downloads.

2) McAfee SiteAdvisor is a great little utility add on to Firefox. When visiting a website, it rates the site as green, yellow, or red. Clicking on the little bar on the bottom of Firefox allows you to visit SiteAdvisor's detailed analysis on why the site was rated the way it did. Here's another great thing about it! When you do a search on a search engine, ex. Google, Yahoo!, MSN, it puts a little green, red, or yellow light next to all the links you get through the search engine. Green meaning good, yellow meaning take caution and red obviously meaning bad.

I hope this was a help to you although I went through more things than you asked for.

Definitely yes, please always install anti-virus software and spyware software too. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx and download the Malicious Software Removal tool, plus check out Windowd Defender at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx . Both of these are free tools and can go a long way to protecting your system, but defintely spend the $50 for a good anti-virus program.

If you're not up to date on all of your security patches and you're running windows, yes. If you have your security settings set too low in your browser, yes. If you have activeX enabled and you click YES on the wrong thing, yes.
