So I'm doing this whole research project on popularity, cliques, pressures to fit in, a whole Odd Girl Out kind of paper, looking at popularity from both ends of the spectrum. I have alot of research all ready, but I want others opinions in my project. So what thoughts, words, or images even, come to mind when you hear the word popularity? Does it make you supress a shudder, or do you imagine the perfect blond haired blue eyed rich girl of your dreams. Since this is for a school paper, please dont be vulgar, and I'd appreciate it if you'd include your age and gender. Thanks.

I think of the "in-group" that has fleeting popularity and prestige for a small length of time and then fade from the scene. I had lots of friends in grade school, but that all changed when boys came on the scene and I never fit in. I was the smart quiet one who never got picked for any of the teams. My mother always told me not to cry because I never knew what kind of problems the popular girls were living with and that I would take my own any day over theirs. It is many years down the road and I still don't fit in at my husband's social circles. At least, I"ve always been true to myself, my ideals, and my generation's ambitions. It's different now. I am aging very, very well in terms of hair and my face. My family doctor says that I could pass for mid-40's. It doesn't matter if you are popular are not, you have to find your validation from within yourself and not from your peer group. Late fifties, female.

Popularity.....someone liked by a lot of people. :)

I was fairly popular in high school but was never stuck on myself, arrogant or high and mighty. I was just friendly to everyone and had an outgoing personality.

I was not rich either, by any means.

Don't put all popular people into one "ugh" category. Some popular people are popular for more than riches and so-called perfection....it's what's inside and how they treat others.

Popularity isn't bad. It isn't bad to be liked by lots of people. It's only bad when popular kids use their so-called popularity "power" to exclude others. Most popular people are abnormally friendly and outgoing; therefore, liked by others. Preps, cheerleaders, and football players and other such stereotypical popular folk, are only popular within their groups. There are plenty of likeable popular people who are nerds or gangstahs.

It used to be cheerleader with the cute boyfriend and alot of money....

But in my senior year of high school it began to be the punk type people. our salutatorian was one of the most popular people even though she sat in the hall way and taught herself everything with her black hair and tight all the way down jeans and black and white shirts.

she dyed her own hair in the oddest colors... on senior awards night she wore black and red and her hair was platinum and red in one spot that was longer than the rest of her hair.

if that was the way that it was when i was in middle school i would have been so much more popular.

It brings up negative images of unfriendly girls & arrogant boys (or women/men) who reach such status because of their wealth or family name, not because of their kindness to others. It's all backwards.

When I think of popularity, I think of someone tanned, wears fancy clothes, and who's confident is a nasty way.
