This is called jaundice. It is a buildup of a substance naturally found in the body called bilirubin. An infant's liver cannot filter the bilirubin in the blood correctly. Put the baby in the sunshine (for some reason, the sun has an effect on bilirubin that makes it easier for the immature livers to filter). If the jaundice seems severe, or the whites of the eyes turn yellow, take the baby to the hospital ASAP. High levels of bilirubin can cause deafness and mental retardation or other permanent brain damage.

It is called jaundice. It is caused when the liver is unable to work properly, often in newborns. The liver is unable to breakdown dead blood cells. The dead blood cells start to produce a biproduct called bilirubin. The liver is not ridding the body of the biproduct fo it begins to be stored in the body tissues, usually the skin. Although common in newborns, high levels can cause brain damage which can lead to life long difficulties. Usually light therapy is the cure. They have light pads (ours was called a wallaby) that you can take home. You lay the baby on the light pad (thin as about cardboard and very flexible) and then it has very soft straps to wrap around baby to ensure it stays on.

Babies used to be hospitalized when bilirubin hit 15. My son had 18.9. Although once it reaches 20 it can cause brain damage, the doctors know babies heal better at home and now often send light therapy machines to homes. My son was on the lights for 6 days. The only time lights were allowed to come off were for bathing and diaper changes. It was difficult to breastfeed with it on but you know it is the only option to get your child better so you learn to live with it. My son has no lasting effects and is perfectly healthy.

Mother nature naturally stores extra bilirubin in the skin because sunlight is very effective in getting rid of the biproduct. So putting the extra in the skin your body is hoping to get help from sunlight until the liver can function properly on its own. The yellow pigment starts at the crown of the head and works its way down the body as the biproduct increases. The most common place to look for first sign is the whites of the eyes. They also turn yellow. Sometimes until the yellowing continues below the neck it is hard to see. So most doctors look at the eyes for a early sign.

Good Luck

Its known as Jaundice...The yellowish coloration is caused by an excess amount of bilirubin in the baby's skin. Bilirubin is a yellowish-red pigment. Normally, small amounts of bilirubin are found in everyone's blood. When too much bilirubin is made, the excess is dumped into the bloodstream and is deposited in tissues for temporary storage...Hope this helps :)

jaundice. my daughter had this when she was one day old and had to stay in the hospital for a week under the bili lights. she was in an incubator type thing and had alot of light on her. uv ray lights to be exact. she had to wear little foam goggles. it can be very serious so if your child has yellow skin get them in to be checked out. too much bilirubin in their blood can lead to brain damage. you can also sit a baby in the sunlight in just a diaper for about 10 mins at a time. just sit them next to the window or something. the uv rays from this will help too.

Definately Jaundice. wheni had my baby girl the Doctors said she managed to creat her own blood type. As opposed to having either my husbands blood type or mine or a mix she had developed her own individual blood type which was not either mine or my husbands. Doctors said her lliver was having to work just a little harder to process the blood. So sshe turned a bit yellow but was ok. We needed to stay at the hospital a few days longer, but she is perfect now.

you should see the doctor as soon as possible to get it checked out =)

You mean jaundice?

It's caused by high levels of a pigment in the blood called bilirubin. When old red blood cells break down, one of the byproducts they create is bilirubin. Everyone has bilirubin in their blood, which is normally removed from your blood by the liver and then eliminated in the stool. Before the baby was born, the mother's liver removed his bilirubin for him. Now it takes time for his liver to take over the task — so the pigment builds up in his blood and his skin takes on the yellowish cast of jaundice.
