I recently began practicing on a swim team and am really sore and tired all the time. We practice twice a day everyday for a total of 4 hours. What can I do to help relieve some of the soreness? I am also in school and find it increasingly hard to stay awake and pay attention. Any ideas? I want to keep swimming, I like being on the team. I just need to know how to adjust to the effect it's having on my body.

It's natural to feel tired after 4 hours of swimming everyday. It is one of the most intense workouts for burning calories out there, especially if your a competitive swimmer on your high school or college team. There is not much you can do other to rest and rest some more. Don't burn yourself out.
Peace,

You should be tired and sore after 4 hours of swimming!!! You will get use to it over time. The thing to remember is you must recover properly! I can’t stress that enough, you are young and probably recover pretty well but you must eat properly after your workouts, and you must eat properly to fuel your workouts. Pick up some nutrition books, Monique Ryan has some good books on the subject.
Pick up some Endurox R4 for post workout recovery, it will help you recover faster and make you stronger for the next workout. It’s kind of expensive but easy to make (it’s a power that you mix with water). If you can’t get the recovery drink be sure to eat some carbs and protein within an hour after your workout.
Go to bed early – Yeah I know, it’s hard, I have a teenager at home. But you don’t get faster if you don’t recover, and you recover by sleeping and eating correctly!
Oh, don’t worry about being sore, that will go away as your body gets use to the work load. Give it a few weeks.
Let us know how you are doing! And Good Luck! :)

PS
Please, please, please, eat enough and eat well!

I know exactly how you feel. I started that in August. To relieve soreness you can either ice it or put heat on it. Also, stretching helps sometimes. If that isn't enough then you can take an ibuprofen or Tylenol. To stay awake you should just try to go to bed earlier or wake up later.

to cut down on some soreness try drinking some pickle juice before practice once a day but not too much! like 1/2 a cup this will also stop alot of cramps! you need to also eat more fruits and veggies. don't worry what you're going through is normal

I don't feel like composing a paragraph on this so I'm just going to list the answers to your problems.

Sore: Advil, or ice sore area's.
Tired: Caffeine or a multi-Vitamen
Both: Consult a doctor
