Z-71 is mostly marketing.

Z-71 is just some skid plates, perhaps different shock absorbers, and **most importantly** some snazzy stickers on the side of the truck with a cool-sounding Z-code.

The fact that people think it's a bigger motor (Corvette motor even!!) is testament to how well the marketing behind it works!!!

While owning a 2000 Chevrolet Z-71 and a 2005 Chevrolet 4X4 nothing really different. The 4X4 is more of a manual thing. IE.. the term "4 on the Floor" actually applies. Manual Transmission, Manual 4X4 shifter, Manual windows, etc.. Of course you can opt to have all the extra options, but then you'd just upgrade to a Z-71. The Z-71 has the same Skid Plates and everything that the standard 4X4 has. However, with the Z-71 package you get Power windows, Automatic Transmission, Power mirrors, typically a bigger engine (ie.. 5.7 Liter V-8 versus the 5.3 Liter V-8 standard in most Chevey Trucks) Also with a Z-71 you get the push button 4X4 with the auto 4 Wheel Drive option. Hope it helps

Same truck. Z-71 is GM's 4x4 offroad package, basically upgrade shocks and skidplates. Skidplates are also installed on some 4x4 truck, just not the upgraded shocks. As far us limited slip differentials, they are an option on the Z-71 and the 4x4.

No corvette motor, could be ordered with the v6 also

A Z-71 can have a 4x4 package, so spend the extra $ on the Z-71 w/4x4 as opposed to a normal 4x4 package.

Every Z-71 I ever saw was a 4x4. The Z is outfitted with options to make it more suitable for off-road use.

Well startign in 2007 the Z-71 package does not signify it as a $wd truck anymore. Now it is just an option package that will cost more but it is also available on 2WD and 4WD trucks starting withthe 2007 models.

4x4 is the more plain package ( smaller tires not quite as good as suspension ) But the Z-71 most always 4x5 as well and it is more of the off road package ( biger tires better suspension ) But for as everyday driving you want find much difference.

Z-71 is an off road package with the supposed Corvette motor in it. Other than that not much differences.
