we recently spent $140 to have the furnace man turn on the pilot light. It would not catch./
Well we havent shut it since. Yesterday my sister got hot, and turned it off without knowing,

well I turned it on, we got a pilot light, and heat blowing through a few vents in the home, but not all. it 17 degrees outside, and freezing in my home.
I have 3 small children and I have them bundled. what can I do to get the heat going in the rooms that are not getting it?
Any ideas or suggestions without calling the furnace man?

this is an old furnace and has always been faulty. It was like magic, the guy was in the basement for two minutes, boom the house was warm,
my sister turned it off for two hours, its not working right.
SO I know the vents are properly adjusted, ic ant figure out how to get it working.

Nobody has mentioned a damper. Make sure the damper in the main trunk line is open and can stay in the open position.

It's hard to believe this is different than before the furnace man came, but there are two possibilities:
1) normally when you have the AC on you selectively open the upstairs vents. The reverse is true with the heat, you want to selectively open the downstairs vents. This is because heat rises and cold sinks.

Check all vents to make sure they are open. There is usually an adjuster mechanism. Some vents don't have it.

Second, Go to the furnace and start following the lines from the furnace. There are usually Valve type flappers in each ventilation duct. If one or more than one of these is closed it could cut off many registers.

Normally the flapper has some sort of adjustment lever, and normally the flapper is mounted in the middle of the duct. You will have to loosen a screw to move the flapper. move it until the adjustment lever is pointed in the direction of the duct. (it should be at 90 degrees to the duct if the flapper is closed.)

Good Luck!

Ok might sound silly but sometimes it's a simple fix. First check to see that the grates covering the ducts are open. If they are you can also check the pipes leading from the furnace. You'll notice they have a hinge of sorts on each one that can be turned.

Those will either allow air to move freely through or block it. Perhaps some of those are closed? Follow with your eyes the pipes leading from the furnace to the rooms you know have heat and pay close attention to how the "hinge" is turned.

Repeat the same process with the rooms that don't have heat. If the valve/hinge is in a dif postion, change them to match the others you know are transporting heat. Hope this helps.

The furnace is the only heat source. Make sure all the vents are open.

If the pilot won't stay lit you likely need to replace the thermocouple.

Maybe you should get down and inspect them, they may not be opeded all the way. You paid the furnace man a bunch. I got the pilot going for a neighbor even put in the whole new gas valve and thermocouple and didn't get anything for it.

If you are renting the place there is always a solution,if you are a landlord or owner of the place, better check out your heat piping. There is inside the pipe lot of rust or scaling.Clean it out or change the pipes system ( a copper tubing or stainless steel tubing).Check the heat valve are they opened?

make sure that all the vents are not blocked then if it's still not sending out air then take the register off and make sure nothing is in the vent its self.
