no, the games do not usually lead on to the next game (the exception being X and X-2, the first final fantasy to have a sequal)

there are only four FF games for ps2, but the majority of them are on psx discs, and can be played on the ps2. Crystal Chronicles, Tactics Advanced, and III are the only ones that can't be played from the ps2

one of the things about final fantasy is that each game has a different magic and battle system - with the exception of VII, which didn't add anything original to the final fantasy franchise, having spent the budget on cinematic art instead

it sounds to me like the basis of your question is that you want to know which game to start with. generally, the first game you play and master will be your favorite - and i would advise you to go with IV (can be found on the set Final Fantasy Chronicles, coupled with another great RPG, Chrono Trigger)

each Final Fantasy is a different story, so it doesn't matter which one you play. they each have re-occuring elements though, like Chocobos, Cactuars, a supporting character named Cid, and a secret boss named something like Ultima Weapon or Omega Weapon. it really doesn't matter where you start though
