Mahwah requires permits for replacing water heaters. I don't know how you would dispose of the old one.

NO... you do not need a permit to replace the hot water heater... As far as picking up the OLD one. Does your town/city have garbage pick up? If it does, it may ALSO HAVE a special once a month or once a quarter pick up of such things s old sofas, stoves, hot water heaters, etc... If not you may have to cart it off to the dump yourself

don't know about the permit requirements in Mahwah. If you have it replaced by a plumber let him take it with him.
