It is short for Christmas. You see, Christmas is Jesus birthday. Jesus is considered Christ, so lazy people write xmas instead of christmas.

A lot of people use xmas as an abbreviation, yes. But really, Christmas isn't Christ's birthday at all. Christians co-opted the pagan holiday to try to lure people away from paganism. Back then, Christianity was all about power and politics - so you see, things haven't changed all that much.
If you don't believe it, ask yourself where an evergreen tree would come from considering Christ's birth place. Or why he would be born in a manger in December. That list goes on and on: holly, mistletoe, gifts, lights...
We make the notably unpopular decision (among Christians) to celebrate it as the Winter Solstice.
But enjoy it however you want to. Merry Xmas! :-)

Actually... xmas was created as a very prejudice term for Christmas. Most people didn't realize this, which makes it "acceptable". The term X-Mas was meant to show the Cross (Jesus died on the cross to repent for our sins) at its side... to show that they didn't believe that.
Many people do not know this, therefore I do not judge anyone who uses it.

Xmas" and "X-mas" are common abbreviations of the word "Christmas". They are sometimes pronounced "eksmas", but they, and variants such as "Xtemass", originated as handwriting abbreviations for the pronunciation "Christmas". The "-mas" part came from the Anglo-Saxon for "festival", "religious event": Crīstesmæsse or Crīstemæsse. This abbreviation is widely but not universally accepted; some view it as demeaning to Christ, whilst others find it a helpful abbreviation
