When someone is spelling out a word or giving someone a Part Number or VIN Number on the phone that contains letters...

For example:
Break

B as in Boy
R
E as in Edward
A as in Apple
K

Part #VB96K

V as in...
B as in boy

Does this have a specific name, this technique? Are their certain words you are supposed to use when doing this or does it matter what words you use, just as long as the person on the other line understands what word you are saying?

well i think what you are looking for is the phonetic alphabet

but thats more a, alpha, b, bravo, c, charlie, d, delta, e, echo, kinda thing

Yes. the words are chosen to be unambiguous. The present alphabet was chosen shortly after the second world war. This is the alphabet used by ICAO, the international civil aviation organisation.
