I'm a writer and published author. Have you tried just jotting some of your ideas down on a piece of paper? Have some fun with it. Use colored markers and use a 'bubble diagram'.

In the center of your big huge construction paper, draw a huge bubble. In it, put the title of your book or in it, put one of the main characters that will be in the book. Then, draw a few more circles next to the big one. Use lines to connect them. In the smaller circles, include ideas about the main character. What will be the character's favorite foods, what will he enjoy reading, where will he live would be written in these smaller bubbles. Continue with this method until the whole page is filled with connecting bubbles. Once you are done, you should have a whole page filled with what the main character in your story will be about.

Many authors use this technique. It gets the creative juices flowing and it's fun.

Please pick mine as 'best answer'.

Try to come up with a main character for your story. Write down a description - male, female, eye color, etc. etc.

Then take this character and imagine then in some odd place or scenario – anything goes! Write down ideas on what would have to happen to your character or how they would react to the scenario you placed them in.

You can do this for multiple characters if you like.

This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out some characters and give you insight into what you may want to happen to this type of character in a potential story. You may even come up with multiple story lines!

Strong well crafted main characters can inspire readers to love your story as well as drive you to write a great story for these imagined beings so be in! :-)

Personal experience is always a good start - from writing a novel, short story, movie script, or essay. The trick comes in "padding" your own experiences with imagination to turn it into fiction - and there the sky is the limit! Depending on your taste of genre, you might consider doing action, "who dunnit?", spying, erotica, etc., etc. Even the most mundane life experience can become something exciting with a spot of imagination!
