Sure they do. My cats know what "treat" means. They get handed out by my hubbie in his room. All you have to say is treat and they are already headed up the stairs. I can tell by their responses that they understand what I say. When I see our one trouble maker getting ready to pest one of the old ladies in our group, I just say, "Don't you dare," and he just turns around and goes away. When I ask a couple who like to drink from the faucet, if they want a drink, they head for the vanity in whatever bathroom we are near, or jump on the counter to drink from the kitchen sink. It all depends on how much time you spend interacting with them. The more you talk to them, they more they seem to understand. I could give you even more for instances, but I think you get my drift.

Hi Renae...animals understand us not in the traditional sense, but through repetition of patterns and sounds. When we say something that they heard before and it was associated with something pleasant and rewarding they learn that each time they hear this it means that something good is going to happen or I'm going to get a special treat. They also recognize body language and respond to it. Another example is when an animal is hit from abuse it soon learns to fear the hand so if someone raises their hand just only to pet the animal it flinches or cowers, etc.

I believe they do. I talk to both my dogs as if they were people. I may sound nuts, but dogs know the tone of your voice. They can understand words, my pug know just what toy to get and where it is; when I go to bed @ night, all I have to do is wave to my pug a "c'mon" wave and he knows I want him to come with me. I think they are alot smarter than we give them credit for. If you pay attention to your dogs, you will also learn their behavior, like what they want, you will then know when they aren't well. My Lab is pretty smart also. Pugs are, from what I read, hard to train and they are stubborn, but they still know what you say and are talking about. My husband and I have to talk in letters, because the dogs know certain words as a treat, ie biscuit. so we have to spell.

I really think our animals do understand a lot more than we do give them credit for. They can comprehend everything that a two year old child can understand.
