Proposals for a playoff (or similar format) have been presented to the NCAA governing body at annual meetings in 1976, 1988 and 1994. Each time, it was overwhelmingly rejected.

The power lies in the hands of the university presidents, who make up this governing body.

Part of it is the tradition of 100 years of college football being extremely successful WITHOUT a playoff.

I'm sure there are more reasons.

I feel your frustration! Who cares if it doesn't generate as much money? A playoff system would be more accurate in determining a National Champion and more fun to watch!
