I'm in middle school and we are getting ready to start a research project. My topic can be anything (not having to do with history really) between 1846 adn 1920. I have NO idea what to do. Does anyone have a great idea that is not about the Civil War or World War 1. There are a ton of people doing those topics and I want to be a litle different.

How about the Industrial Revolution? When I was a freshman in high school I did a project about the Rockefellers and Carnegies and all the families that made their fortune at the end of the 19th century. There is a lot of information available, but it's not something that most people think of when you mention the time period 1846-1920.

You could do something on the completion of the transcontinental railroad (ca 1876) with the golden spike being driven into Promentory Point, UT. This would let you talk about industrial expansion, elimination of the bison, effects on the Indians, etc.
Also, the growth and decline of the US whaling industry, the growth of US steel industry (check out the Allentown, PA Morning Call newspapers' special history of the Lehigh Valley that ran about 2 years ago for a great overview), how the growth of the US automotive industry changed industrialization and caused urbanization.
How about women's suffrage?
I would think these would all be great topics, with lots of sources.

How about the Irish Potato Famine
or the phenomena of how western North America was settled by Europeans
or the Japanese?American alliances formed at this time for military and other modernisation of Japan (see Tom Cruise's movie, The Last Samurai)
this was a period of history rich in change and most of the events which happened then continue to affect us today.
how about the crash of the Stock Exchange and the onset of the Depression
or the twenty year history of the cowboy (that's about as long as they were around in the way they are portrayed in books and movies)
or, since you're in school, the beginnings of public education in the United States

I have always found Teddy Roosevelt interesting. He was a nonconformist, a war hero, a nature lover who started the national park system, President of the U.S., and he started life as a sickly child who no one thought would live to adulthood. If you need to do report about an event and not just a person, Roosevelt was involved with the Mexican American war which is often forgotten about so you may be the only person doing a report on that.

The first thing that came to my mind was the so-called Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, whick killed 25 million people worldwide and effectively ended WWI.
There was a Nova show on PBS recently you can look into.

You could do the gunfight at the OK Corral. It happened in 1881. Watch the movie Tombstone so you have less reading.
